PERRY TO GOOD AT JASON GLYNN MEMORIAL SEASON OPENER FOR GP MIDGETS

Starting a new season with one of the biggest events on the club calendar, the Victorian Grand Prix Midget Association attracted eleven champing at the bit competitors to Avalon Raceway for the prestigious Jason Glynn Memorial where last year’s winner Trevor Perry was just to good as he went back to back in the big race when he led to the line Jason Crawford & Mark Cecil.

The entrant list included Greg Campbell (# 9 Suzuki GSX- Guardline Security)returning to motorsport after a number of seasons away, guest driver for Team Perry the Victorian Super Rod Champion Michael Coad, last year’s club champion Jason Crawford & current Australian champion Paul Perry (# 6 Suzuki GSX – Perry Bros Chassis).

Starting off the front row Travis Florimell got the jump on Crawford (# 50 R1 Yamaha – Pitstop Mowers) the lead on lap two whilst on lap three the engine in Fowlers Suzuki GSX machine blew up, Chalcraft moved into third.

Campbell dropped out with engine issues and Chalcraft (# 15 Suzuki GSX – Gulf Western Oils) moved further forward on lap four taking second from Florimell, Crawford out front continued his surge forward and went on to win from Chalcraft, Florimell, Cecil with fuel issues he needed to look at before heat two, Trevor Perry, Coad, Sean Denning, Paul Perry & David Bacon.

Denning and Bacon (# 36 R1 Yamaha – DB Cleaning & Kanga Hire) then started the second heat at the front of the field with Paul Perry & Cecil starting behind them. Cecil, the week prior had a Sedan victory at his home track Rushworth had a slow start, with Chalcraft from the third row taking the lead on lap one from Florimell with Cecil back in third place.

Chalcraft led past the halfway mark, on lap five Cecil, Crawford & Trevor Perry passed Florimell, at this point the chain come off the engine after a tap between Trevor Perry (# 5 R1 Yamaha – R & P Stainer Grinding) & himself in between turns three & four, Florimell drifted out of the race and infield without the chain attached, two laps later Cecil passed Chalcraft into the lead. Cecil took the win from there with Chalcraft second then Crawford, Trevor Perry, Coad (# 44 Suzuki GSX – Perry Bros Chassis), Denning, Paul Perry & Campbell finishing his first race of the season. Bacon did not finish as he suffered suspension issues.

Lining up in qualifying order for the twelve lap Jason Glynn Memorial final the top qualifier was Crawford with Cecil alongside, Chalcraft & Trevor Perry in the # 55 car built by himself and brother Paul, then Denning & Paul Perry, Florimell & Bacon then Coad & Campbell.

Pitstop Mowers & Jim Phillips supported the event financially with Trevor Perry looking to go back to back & Cecil looking to follow up his recent sedan feature win with a open wheel victory.

The green flag dropped and from the outside spot on the second row, Trevor Perry took the lead on lap one as he went to the outside of Crawford, Cecil (# 7 Suzuki GSX – GV Hydraulink Shepparton)& Chalcraft.

Perry took the led with his brother Paul moving up to fifth. Denning spun on lap five in turn three & four and brought on the caution lights. In its first night out the car Trevor Perry had built & was competing in ran the highline as if it was on rails. Back in the field Campbell & Denning had their own battle; Florimell passed Paul Perry to move into fifth.

Cecil closed up on the second placed Crawford, however nobody was close to Trevor Perry who almost certainly would have a new track record if transponders were compulsorily used, as he won from Crawford, Cecil Chalcraft, Florimell (# 81 R1 Yamaha – TM Lineboring & Engineering), Paul Perry, Coad, Denning, Campbell & Bacon.
